Shirley passed away on March 9, 2020, in Neptune, NJ. She suffered a massive stroke in her home the Saturday prior. Shirley was born in Montclair, NJ on March 16, 1952, to Matthew and Stella Cullen.
Shirley met Bill in 1976 on a blind date arranged by Bill’s fire fighting friends. They were married on February 12, 1977.
Shirley and Bill settled in Hopatcong, NJ where they raised their two sons. They moved to Manahawkin, NJ. Shirley’s last job was in the deli department of Genuardi’s in Barnaget, NJ. Previously, she worked for Bell telephone, WaWa and the Stafford Intermediate School as a cafeteria worker and class support substitute.
Shirley was a devoted wife and mother. After both boys moved out, she continued to pack Bill’s lunch each morning with homemade soup and other goodies made with love.
Shirley’s home made cookies made it to the Rowan college at Burlington College administrative assistants, doctor’s offices, car mechanics, friends, and neighbors. These delicious treats will be missed. Matt and Bill will miss her brownies. Shirley made lots of homemade bread. Her machine could make 2 loaves at a time. She was warm, kind, and generous.
Her cat Leo was rescued when he weighed only one and a half pounds. Shirley used doll bottles and hand fed him back to health. He would lay quietly at her feet after her knee replacement.
Shirley has made hundreds of hand made greeting cards. She spent hours learning new designs and took great pride in them. Shirley was working on 3 designs at the time of her death.
Shirley is survived by Bill, her husband of 43 years, her brother Matt in California, and sons Bill of Mount Laurel, NJ and Matt of Matawan, NJ. Shirley has a maternal uncle, Joe Stankowitz and cousins Doreen and Brian. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins survive her.
