Louis Tunnera Jr.

Louis Tunnera Jr., 90, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away on Sunday, October 24, 2021.

Born in Newark, NJ in 1931, Lou lived in Union before retiring to Manahawkin and then Greenbriar in Waretown. Most recently, he lived with his daughter Lori in Manalapan.

Lou graduated from East Orange High School in 1949, where he was a star basketball player and the team’s top scorer in his senior year. He served honorably in the United States Army and is a veteran of the Korean War. Lou married the love of his life Lois in 1957 and together they raised 2 daughters. He worked as a Compositor at the Newark Evening News and later as a Supervisor at the Star Ledger until his retirement in 1996.

Lou loved all sports but was especially fond of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the NY Giants. He later became a NY Yankees fan in support of his two sons‐in‐law. He enjoyed bowling and bocce and was a member of the Manahawkin Elks, where he frequently helped with the bingo games. He also loved a big bowl of macaroni on Sunday (or any day of the week).

Lou was a good and kind man who loved his family above all else. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Fannie (Pellegrino) Tunnera; his wife of 52 years, Lois (Rabasca) Tunnera; his brother‐in‐law Bob Schumacher and his brother Bob Tunnera. He is survived by his brother Anthony Tunnera and his wife Nuala; his sister Rosemary Schumacher and his sister‐in‐law Karen Tunnera, who was also his best pal; his daughters Lisa Tyson and her husband Bill and Lori Barber and her husband Tom; his beloved grandchildren Katie Tyson and her fiancée Elliott Higdon, Jenna Barber Widener and her husband Alex, Thomas Jr. and Amanda Barber; and his great grandchildren Layton and Rowan Widener, who were the light of his life.
