James Conroy

James Gerard Conroy, died quietly, on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, in Southern Ocean Medical Center, Mannahawkin, NJ. He was 94 years old.

Jim, as he was known to others, was a proud WW2 Army Vet, in Fort Hood Texas, serving from July 5, 1946 to June 20, 1948. He served as a journalist and was the editor of the paper, Stars and Stripes. One of his articles was picked up by the AP.
He and his twin brother, Jack were born to John Joseph Conroy and Virginia Immaculatta Connell (nee) at Union Hospital in the Bronx, NY. They attended and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in The Bronx.

Jim was a trivia buff, who had great recall among many venues including, sports, history, and politics. He loved sports and was an avid NY Giants, NY Mets, and NY Rangers fan. He was a proud historian, receiving his bachelor degree in education from Fordham, and went on to later receive his masters in History. He was also a Life Master in the game of bridge, and continued to play up until weeks before his death.

Jim taught History and Psychology at Northern Valley Regional HS, Demerest, NJ. A great actor and singer, he loved performing in the annual faculty plays, often taking a major role. He was the Varsity Golf Coach, for which he won Coach of the year. He was also the head of the Chess Club, himself an avid student and lifelong participant of the game. Many of his dear friends from the Retired Teachers Association, joined in celebrating the joint-90th birthday celebration held for him and Jack in January of 2019 where they performed several singing duets. He had a great love for music and the opera in particular.

Traveling was one of the great joys of his life, and he did so extensively with his wife, Linda. In particular, he loved France and spoke fondly of his trip to the opera in Rome. No

He is predeceased by his parents, John and Virginia Conroy (1965 and 1981 respectively) , his wife, Linda in 2007, his younger brother, Robert Emmit in 2017, and his daughter, Mary (Conroy) Hall in November of 2022.

He is survived by his twin brother, John (Jack) Conroy and his wife Helene of Sayville, LI, His daughters, Jennifer Claire Mavrorasakis and her husband Manny, of Garnerville NY, Paula Virginia Conroy of Manahawkin, NJ, Katherine Anastasia Morgan and her husband Shon, of Dummerston, Vermont, and Victoria Elizabeth James and her husband Shawn of East Long Meadow, Massachusetts. Grandchildren, Christy Leigh Carrion, Emily O’Keefe, Julian Conroy, Maria Mavrorasakis, Emma Mavrorasakis, Sam Conroy, and Anthony Conroy, many nieces and nephews, and his very dear friends Beau Norton, Judy Healy, Val Clark, and Eileen Dolan.

A memorial gathering with a time of remembrance will be held on Monday, May 8, 2023 from 10am to 12pm at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. The time of remembrance will be broadcast on Facebook live at www.facebook.com/maxwelltobiefuneralhome
